Hearing & Obeying the Voice of GOD

Before you run out and decide that you are going to hear and obey the voice of GOD, please understand that there has to be a relationship FIRST!

So, if you have never asked Jesus Christ to be LORD and savior, that is the first step. Click here for more information on this.

If you are from the Psychic, Spiritist, Occult or New Age Background, I caution you in trying to come at this the same way you would with your background and history. Again, this first relies on the fact that you agree with John 14:6 and second that you have a personal relationship with Jesus. It is NOT formulaic, you cannot do traditions. These are only guidelines that have been helpful to my personal relationship with HIM and cannot be simply used as a legalistic checklist. GOD will change up how HE speaks. The items you see below are guides in the process of learning the person, character, will, ways and purposes of GOD. And you MUST REPENT OF THAT SIN before being able to fully hear GOD. He is not interested in your getting your kicks from this, you being able to promote yourself and/or your being more powerful. YUCK!

I encourage you to read the book by Henry Blackaby, “Experiencing GOD” for more information on the daily experience of GOD.

This relationship with GOD I am talking about must be real and relevant and you must first be available for that relationship approaching it the same way you would with a significant other such as spouse or boyfriend/girlfriend. You cannot think that GOD is some Genie or some means of getting what you want. He is NOT YOUR DOG. He will not roll over, play dead and do tricks.

Also, as you approach this relationship, you may find like me that it is to your advantage to make a space and a time for continued talks. I have a prayer closet and have designated times when the kids are in bed, no one is up and I have already kept all my commitments or lived my values. So, both early in the morning and late at the evening, I seek HIM for relationship that is deep. The rest of the day, we just talk as we go. Sometimes, HIS talk gets heavier or stronger and drives me to hiding away with HIM or to my knees immediately. This is all subject to the way you and Poppa GOD converse and the way the Holy Spirit is able to teach you. It is different for every person.

George Mueller’s Points on Learning to Hear the Voice of GOD:

Here is how Muller summed up the way he entered a heart relationship with God and learned to discern His voice:

1. I seek at the beginning to get my heart into such a state that it has no will of its own in regard to a given matter. Nine-tenths of the trouble with people generally is just here. Nine-tenths of the difficulties are overcome when our hearts are ready to do the Lord’s will, whatever it may be. When one is truly in this state, it is usually but a little way

to the knowledge of what His will is.

2. Having done this, I do not leave the result to feeling or simple impression. If so, I make myself liable to great delusions.

3. I seek the Will of the Spirit of God through, or in connection with, the Word of God. The Spirit and the Word must be combined. If I look to the Spirit alone without the Word. I lay myself open to great delusions also. If the Holy Ghost guides us at all, He will do it according to the Scriptures and never contrary to them.

4. Next I take into account providential circumstances. These often plainly indicate God’s Will in connection with His Word and Spirit.

5. I ask God in prayer to reveal His Will to me aright.

6. Thus, through prayer to God, the study of the Word, and reflection, I come to a deliberate judgment according to the best of my ability and knowledge, and if my mind is thus at peace, and continues so after two

or three more petitions, I proceed accordingly.

And here are my points on discerning the voice of GOD:

When you hear something that you feel might be GOD’s speaking to you, run through the following quick checklist:

1 – The voice sounds like your own voice, but it is a good thing you could never think of.

The Bible states that we are not able to even desire to do good. So, apart from GOD, we cannot think up purely altruistic behavior. This at the very beginning becomes a sign to me when I have a good idea to help someone and I truly get nothing from it.

When these ideas come, I usually immediately think to myself, “Oh, that’s not GOD, that’s just me…”

However, seriously, how often do you ever think about whether or not something is GOD when it is a mundane task? Satan’s greatest trick for the empowered child of GOD is to trick them into thinking that the wonderful drawing of the Holy Spirit is just their imagination or idea!

2 – It will ALWAYS go in accordance with Scripture.

The Bible is my root, my anchor and my authority. Now, the key is that I cannot function fully in being able to quickly react to the WORD of GOD if I do not have it INSIDE ME ALREADY! We have to become the greatest students of the WORD so that when we are in the middle of something or when GOD directs, we don’t have to say, “Hey wait a minute GOD or wait a minute so and so…” “I have to go read the Bible and see what to do!”

Get it inside you BEFORE you need it. The same is true of temptation. On a side note. Be ready to take the devil on before he takes you on! Get the WORD of GOD inside you!!!!!!

3 – If it is in accordance with Scripture and it is a good thing you could never think of under normal conditions, then, it will come in alignment with Godly Counsel in your life.

I run to people I trust that hear GOD more than me. Or at least as much as me. Once I have gone to Scripture and I am still not sure, the multitude of counsel the Bible says is your safety net.

4 – It does NOT feel like you are wearing wet shoes although it will likely make you uncomfortable in a different way.

This last point is ALWAYS LAST!!!!! Never make this first!!!!!! First go through the other steps and then trust your gut. Have you ever had wet shoes? Have you ever heard someone say something in church or do something in church and attribute it to GOD and it just feels like you stepped in something yucky? That is most likely discernment. And when you discern between a good and bad spirit, you are hearing GOD. The same is true here. If you go through the steps and you may still feel uncomfortable, but you definitely KNOW IT’S GOD or you feel the fire of GOD burning in your gut, then you KNOW here at this point it is HIM. However, if you get through the other points and you still are not sure and you get here and it feels iffy. Not that you are scared, but that something just ain’t right as my grandma used to say… Stop and wait. It may be GOD’s protection. The Bible talks about this when it says to NOT lay on hands hastily. We must always be in step with GOD. See John 5:19.

At any rate, I feel like the waiting thing is the least of our worries. We have had so few people on fire and sharing and doing the work of GOD that we need to GO GO GO!!!!! Right?!

Now, when I say “hear,” let me make this perfectly clear as to what I am meaning. I have learned both through experience, the Bible and from others’ experiences with me that there are a number of ways we can “hear.”

GOD may speak to us by:

1 – Another believer

2 – The church

3 – His WORD

4 – Circumstances

5 – His Holy Spirit

However, he also may sovreignly speak or He may speak through the Holy Spirit. And if we are available, literally saying, “GOD, speak to me. Show me your will. Show me where to join you as you are working. Help me have the courage to join you.” He will speak to you and lead you step by step through your day. Now, when HE speaks through HIS Spirit or Sovreingly, that means the following:

1 – He can speak sovreignly through simply talking out loud where everyone hears us.

2 – He can speak sovreignly through simply talking out loud and we are the only ones that understand HIM where others may hear nothing or hear thunders.

3 – He may move us and we not know how or why we are moving and doing what we are doing. (This is not scary and IS NOT possession. GOD is a gentleman and is careful with us. This often feels precious like a Father leading a child).

4 – He may give us a feeling, impression and even a lurch in our stomach that reminds us of butterflies mixed with aching. Or a pulling from within ones core. (This of course IS NOT the same as stomach cramps that may be physical although, sometimes these feel almost the same at the height of intercession).

5 – Someone may see something visibly that they know is not there or an image inside their head while praying. (It could be a word, a sentence or an image).

6 – An impression. (This is the hard one. It’s just a feeling or sense about something. Usually discernment).

7 – A strong desire

8 – A voice inside you that sounds just like your voice and thoughts, but is too good to explain away.

Please hear me in this. THESE THINGS MUST BE BROUGHT under the above steps to discerning whether the experiences match up with GOD and HIS known character. YOU NEVER SHOULD SIMPLY MOVE OFF OF THE ABOVE 8 ITEMS!

And the catch is that the younger we are in this, the more scary this can be. Gifting is never an indicator of maturity. We need maturity BEFORE we have HUGE ability in anything such as hearing GOD. Therefore, cultivate the relationship through worship first.

This list is NOT exhaustive. And I am only trying to get you to see that there is more to this walk than you can imagine. Have fun!
